Dimensions of Linear Momentum

Dimensional Formula of Linear Momentum

The dimensional formula of linear momentum is given by,

[MLT-1]

Where,

  • M = Mass
  • L = Length
  • T = Time

Derivation

Linear Momentum = Mass × [Velocity] . . . . . . (1)

The dimensional formula of,

Mass = [M1 LT0] . . . . (2)

Velocity = [M0 LT-1] . . . . (3)

On substituting equation (2) and (3) in equation (1) we get,

Linear Momentum = Mass × [Velocity]

Or, L = [MLT0] × [MLT-1] = [MLT-1].

Therefore, linear momentum is dimensionally represented as [MLT-1].
