CBSE Class 9 and 10 Periodic Tests to be Easier

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made the internal assessment for Classes 9 and 10 easier from the academic session 2019-20. The periodic tests, which are part of the internal assessment, will now be 20 marks and will be conducted in a 1-hour time duration. Previously, the periodic tests were of 80 marks and would be conducted in 3 hours. Now, students won’t feel the pressure of the periodic test and can prepare easily.

There will be a total of 3 periodic tests, which will be conducted for each subject. The average of the best 2 will be taken for final marks. The weightage of each periodic test will be 5 marks only. It is expected that the first periodic test will be conducted in August. This will also prepare students of Classes 9 and 10 for final summative exams in a more confident manner.

Internal Assessment Marks Distribution for Class 9 and 10

Internal assessment consists of a total of 20 marks. The distribution of marks is shown in the table below:

Topic Marks
Periodic Test 10
Subject Enrichment 05
Notebook 05
Total 20

As notified by CBSE, the periodic test will be conducted in a zero period along with the first period. By simplifying the periodic test evaluation method, it is expected that students’ performance in the exam will improve. They will focus more on their studies and understand the subject instead of just mugging the topics for exams.
