This chapter specifically deals with the process of respiration in plants. Just like how most living organisms respire, even plants need to respire as it is essential for their metabolic activities. But unlike animals, the respiration in plants are completely different. Animals use oxygen for respiration and let out carbon dioxide as the metabolic waste product. Plants on the other hand use carbon dioxide and water to excrete oxygen as the waste product. This is because plants use sunlight to undergo photosynthesis to create their own food.
Respiration is an important activity that happens in all living organisms. It can be either aerobic respiration or anaerobic respiration depending upon the organism. But plants can either be both.
Anaerobic respiration basically means the respiration process happens without the presence of oxygen. There are also some bacteria that are anaerobic. But usually, aerobic respiration produces more energy when compared to anaerobic respiration.
Anaerobic respiration was the most common form of respiration nearly 3.8 billion years ago when the earth didn’t have any oxygen in its atmosphere.
